Scholarship Program

At Leading Tone we are dedicated to reducing as many barriers as possible that prevent students from receiving a great education in instrumental music. Nearly half of all students in the State of Washington participate in the free and reduced lunch program. Music instruction is not considered part of a basic education and is therefore not entirely covered by public funds.  Most school districts require a fee to participate in the program of about $150, then the student needs to rent or purchase an instrument at an average of $30 per month (or a purchase of hundreds or thousands of dollars) plus all the needed accessories and supplies that can run between $40-$100. According to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, 45% of all public school families in Washington State are enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program.  This indicates that the costs of participating in instrumental music is likely a burden for nearly half of the students who may be interested.  Musical education has such far reaching benefits that we would like to assist as many students as possible to participate.

In addition to our rewards program that gives a portion of all rental fees and purchases back to the schools to help with supplies and accessories, we have a scholarship program which seeks donation of instruments from members in our community that are no longer in use. These instruments are cleaned, repaired and expertly tuned before being loaned to children in need. When that child leaves the music program the instrument is returned to us so it can be loaned to another child.

If you are in need of a scholarship instrument in order to participate in your schools music program please contact us for more information.

If you have an instrument you are no longer using, collecting dust in the closet or basement, please consider donating it to our scholarship program for a child in need. We are a for profit business, so your donation is not tax deductible but would be greatly appreciated by a child who wants to learn to play an instrument, but cannot afford to. We  guarantee that we will never profit from your instrument donation. We are in need of any Band and Orchestra instruments but particularly, violin, viola, flute, trumpet, clarinet, and saxophone. If the instrument is not in good playing condition we can take care of that. If you have an instrument to donate please contact us.
